California Takes Action to Improve Employee Health

In an effort to help more California businesses promote health at work, an online teaching tool has been created by the Network for a Healthy California. The website is funded through the California Department of Public Health, and the program is called The California Fit Business Kit.

The downloadable Kit contains ten powerful tools to help employers implement simple and low-cost health promotion efforts at their work sites. The broad focus of the Kit is increasing the availability of healthy foods and providing opportunities for employees to be physically active at work. Since employees spend nearly half of their waking hours at work, it is imperative that our business culture embrace a system which includes education and implementation of wellness.

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has spoken publicly about the need for prevention and wellness as part of the state's health care initiatives. There are many other initiatives being sponsored through grants and universities, but the state still has its work cut out for it because of the large population of of vulnerable, difficult-to-reach migrants, illegals, and uninsured residents.
